How to Drive a Class A Motorhome

For true luxury when you’re camping, it’s hard to beat the space and amenities provided by a Class A motorhome. You’ll get plenty of storage, lots of sleeping space, bigger kitchens, higher ceilings and so much more when you invest in one of these massive recreational vehicles, so they’re worth the money.

But when you look at these motorhomes, with their bus-like shape and length, you might think, “How can anyone drive these things?!” Fortunately, it’s not as hard as it might seem! You’ll need to put in some practice and be vigilant, but driving a Class A motorhome safely can be done.

Know Your Brakes

A Class A motorcoach is designed with a brake that is different from what you might be accustomed to using. Your average passenger car or truck is equipped with hydraulic brakes, which can stop quickly when you apply pressure to the brake pedal. While hydraulic brakes are fast to react, they do break down over time and they can also be somewhat difficult to control.

Air brakes are used in your Class A motorhome. They require air compression to activate in order to slow down the car. When you apply these brakes, you have to use constant pressure over several seconds in order to bring the vehicle to a complete stop. The nice thing about air brakes is that they will continue to work even if they have a leak so you can get by without fixing them immediately.

Increase Following Distance

Because your air brakes take longer to engage, you’ll need to do something else while driving: increase your following distance. The time it takes your Class A motorhome to stop is going to be several seconds, so you’ll want to leave a space cushion between the front of your motorcoach and the car ahead of you. You’ll need to remain vigilant, however, since people may try to veer into that empty space.
